The Average Size of Begonias

Begonias Get To Be About 1 Foot Tall

Begonia plants will usually grow to be around one foot tall. They also produce many colorful flowers.

These flowers can grow to be as big as four inches wide. This is referring to the common begonias that you buy as houseplants.

There are also begonias that can grow to be bigger than this. Some might even grow to be three feet long.

You should be able to seek out begonias that will grow to be as big as you want them to be. Some might prefer begonias that will only grow to be around one foot long while others might want the biggest plants possible.

Some begonias are going to be well suited for potting since they will stay relatively small. Plants that are sold as cocktail begonias are a good example of this.

Other begonias will be perfect choices for your flower beds. Pizzazz and victory begonias are said to be amazing options for flower beds.

So the best advice that you can get for this is to pick your begonias carefully. Look at specific information about the begonias that you’re buying so that you will understand how big they’re likely to get.

How Can You Make Them Grow Bigger?

What if you want to ensure that your begonias grow to be as big as possible? Is there a reliable way to make them produce the biggest and boldest blooms possible?

There are actually many things that you can do to help your begonias grow to be large and impressive. You won’t suddenly be able to make a plant that has a maximum height of one foot double in length, but you will be able to make the blooms as big as they can be.

You can also encourage the most growth possible. Below, you’ll be able to learn about several ways that you can positively impact the growth of begonias.

Soil Matters

No matter what type of begonias you’re planting, you need to know that the soil that you use matters. Buying high-quality soil will ensure that the begonias have everything that is necessary to thrive.

Begonias need soil that is capable of draining well. You want well-draining soil that is also very nutrient-rich for these plants.

If the soil doesn’t drain properly, then the begonias will suffer. They don’t do very well in soggy soil, and this could even kill the begonias if things get too bad.

Needless to say, the begonias won’t grow to be big and pretty if they don’t have the proper soil. Ensure that you’re using soil with good drainage to get the right results.

It’s also good to keep the soil just a little bit loose. Try not to pack it too tightly.

Plant the Begonias in an Ideal Spot

Begonias Grow Best In Indirect Light

Planting the begonias in an ideal spot will help them to grow better. You’ll find that begonias do okay when they get a bit of direct sunlight during the day.

However, they can’t tolerate too much direct sunlight. They’re going to need plenty of shade to stay safe.

Try to plant the begonias somewhere in the yard where they will get more morning sun than anything else. Afternoon sun is often too harsh since it will be the hottest part of the day.

Even a location where the begonias will get a bit of evening sun will be acceptable. You just want to avoid the harsh sunlight from the afternoon sun since it has the potential to stress the plants.

Begonias need the sunlight to be able to grow and stay healthy. They just also need to be protected from harsh sunlight.

Water the Begonias Properly

Proper watering will be a huge part of keeping the begonias in good condition. They will grow better if you’re watering them on an optimal schedule.

Begonias need moisture to grow, but too much can be very bad for these flowers. One inch of water per week is said to be perfect for this plant.

If the natural rainfall isn’t enough, then you’ll need to water the begonias yourself. Don’t go overboard since the begonias can’t tolerate soggy soil.

When you have to water the begonias, try to do so early in the morning. This gives the soil the chance to dry up during the day.

Use Fertilizer

As you might expect, using fertilizer will help the begonias to grow, too. If you give your begonias the right fertilizer, then it can keep them blooming from the spring up until the autumn months.

Repeated flowering will deplete the soil of nutrients. You’ll be able to add necessary nutrients back to the soil using fertilizer.

Begonias that are planted in the ground should be fertilized every three to four weeks during the growing season. Container begonias can be fertilized every two weeks.

Give the begonias fertilizer that will distribute a low dose of nutrients. It’s safer not to give the plants too much fertilizer at once.

This should help the begonias to grow more blooms. If you give the begonias too much fertilizer too fast, then it’ll make the foliage grow rather than the blooms.

Final Thoughts

You know how big begonias will be on average now. Some plants might only grow to be eight inches long, but others can be three feet long.

Most of the average begonias that people buy for garden beds will grow to be one foot long. The blooms will be up to four inches wide.

You can make the begonias grow bigger by caring for them properly. This means planting them in well-draining soil, giving them the right amount of sunlight, and watering the begonias enough without going overboard.

Fertilizer will also help to promote growth and greater blooming. Just remember to fertilize responsibly.

I have had my begonia indoors in a pot for 18 months. It never flowers. I water it twice a week & fertilize it as well every 4 months or so. How can I get it to flower?
